Direct answer
You should choose a Thai e-Visa application post by checking your actual location, your right to live or stay there, your passport and your visa category together. Your passport country is one fact in that decision. A hotel address, an overseas bank account or a convenient flight does not settle it on its own.
In this guide
Our starting question is simple: which Thai embassy or consulate is authorised to consider this particular application while you are in this particular place? Answering that before payment can prevent an expensive journey built around an application the chosen post cannot accept.
Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the worldwide e-Visa rollout through 94 embassies and consulates from 1 January 2025. That expanded online access; it did not make the receiving post irrelevant. The Department of Consular Affairs expressly describes worldwide application as excluding Thailand.
This guide explains a decision process for expatriates, frequent travellers and families whose nationality, residence and present location differ. It covers several visa categories without pretending they share one residence rule. If you have already chosen a DTV route and need the detailed residence documents, use our DTV residence and filing-evidence guide. For the initial upload file, use the Thai e-Visa document checklist.
Start with four different facts
Nationality normally comes from your citizenship and the passport or travel document used for the application. Residence describes an established connection to a country and, where relevant, the immigration status permitting it. Physical location is where you actually are. Consular jurisdiction identifies the territory for which a Thai mission handles the relevant service. These facts can point to different places without anything being wrong.
A person might hold an Indian passport, live in Germany with a residence permit and be visiting Singapore. Their nationality is not German, their current location is not Germany, and a Singapore hotel booking does not turn them into a Singapore permanent resident. The application question is what the relevant mission accepts for the intended category given that complete situation.
We recommend writing these facts before opening the application form. Use the precise status written on the residence document, with its expiry date. Add where you expect to be when you submit, pay and wait for the decision. This makes hidden assumptions visible: perhaps you planned to submit while on a short holiday, although the post requires you to remain in its territory.
| Fact | Question to answer | What it does not establish alone |
|---|---|---|
| Passport and nationality | Which document will you use, and what nationality does it record? | The country in which you currently live |
| Immigration status abroad | What permission do you hold, and until when? | That every Thai visa category accepts that status |
| Actual location | Where are you now and where will you submit? | Permanent residence or a right to select any local post |
| Responsible mission | Which territory and category does the post cover? | Approval of the individual application |
The table is our planning framework. It is not an official eligibility test and should be read alongside the receiving mission's current instructions.
Read online availability and filing eligibility separately
An online system can accept typed information before an officer has checked whether the application belongs at that post. A visible mission in a menu is therefore a useful starting point, not the final answer. Treat technical access, permission to file and substantive visa eligibility as separate questions.
The practical order is to identify the correct category, check the likely mission, read its territorial and applicant rules, and compare those rules with your actual status. Only then should you invest heavily in evidence that is specific to that application. This is particularly useful if police certificates, translations or travel will cost money or take several weeks.
Do not change the facts in the form to obtain a more convenient menu. If your real current location does not produce the result you expected, stop and investigate the reason. A country entered as a future destination is not your current country. An address belonging to a relative is not automatically your residence. Administrative convenience does not make an inaccurate answer harmless.
Equally, do not assume a technical difficulty means the category is unavailable to you. It could be a passport selection, a local process, a browser problem or a territory served by a mission elsewhere. Preserve the error wording and check official guidance. The useful question is why the correct facts cannot be entered or routed, rather than which inaccurate answer makes the screen advance.
We would regard the eligibility check as complete only when the official information and your facts can be described together without a missing step. If a material step depends on interpretation, obtain clarification before submission.
Identify your real purpose before selecting a country
The place where you can apply may depend on the visa you actually need. A short tourist visit, employment with a Thai organisation, retirement, family stay and remote professional activity are different purposes. Choosing an accessible country first and then searching for a visa label that fits its easiest checklist reverses the decision.
Write one ordinary sentence explaining the intended activity in Thailand. Include who benefits from any work, who pays you, whether you will join a Thai employer, and whether your family members have their own qualifying purpose. You do not need promotional language. A clear factual description helps identify the right official category and its location rules.
| Intended situation | Category question to resolve | Location issue to check early |
|---|---|---|
| Holiday with no separate long-stay purpose | Appropriate tourist route or current entry alternative | Whether the post accepts your status as a visitor or resident |
| Overseas remote professional activity | Whether the activity and evidence fit DTV Workcation | Current DTV nationality and residence conditions |
| Retirement | Which retirement category or in-country process fits | Overseas filing rules for that exact route |
| Joining family | Relationship and sponsor category | Each applicant's location and status, including children |
| Work for a Thai employer | Appropriate employment route and employer evidence | Mission acceptance plus the employer's document sequence |
| Study or treatment | Correct programme or treatment purpose | Post-specific category documents and filing eligibility |
These are routing questions, not an assertion that every person in a row qualifies. Our retirement route comparison, family visa guide and Non-B work-visa guide address their respective eligibility questions. Keeping that detail with its route prevents a general location guide from promising a universal answer.
Find the mission that covers your territory
Use the official Thai e-Visa website and the relevant embassy or consulate website together. Check the full title of the mission and its consular territory. A country may have several visa-issuing posts, while one embassy can serve applicants in more than one country. The nearest building on a map is not necessarily the responsible office.
The New York consulate provides a concrete example: its current visa page assigns e-Visa services to residents of ten named northeastern US states. That makes state-level jurisdiction relevant even when both possible posts are in the United States.
For someone with an unusual territorial connection, record both the national and subnational answer. A recent interstate move, a university address and a family home in another state may require an explanation. Do not quietly select the address that sends the case to a preferred post. Describe where you actually live and ask which evidence establishes the relevant connection.
If no Thai mission is physically located in your country, look for the mission with official responsibility for that territory. Do not infer that you must travel to its city simply because it is the handling office; check whether its process requires any in-person step. Conversely, do not infer that the online submission removes every local payment or interview requirement.
Record the page you used and the date checked. Mission names, coverage and procedures should be verified again if your plan changes. A screenshot of an old menu or another person's application is a poor substitute for the current responsibility statement.
Compare mission rules without turning examples into universal law
Current mission pages show why the full category matters. London's general guidance accepts applicants with eligible immigration status, or permanent residence for DTV, who currently reside in its covered territories. It also warns that departure during processing may lead to cancellation. Kuala Lumpur's general FAQ requires applicants to be in Malaysia and lists several forms of current-location evidence. Read each alongside the relevant category instructions.
| Published example checked on 20 September 2026 | Practical implication | Boundary of the example |
|---|---|---|
| New York identifies a list of covered US states | Confirm your state falls within the selected post's territory | This does not decide whether your visa category is suitable |
| London distinguishes eligible status from DTV permanent residence | Read the category exception before relying on a general residence statement | Another mission may publish different evidence examples |
| Kuala Lumpur asks for current presence in Malaysia | A future arrival booking does not explain where you are now | Its general FAQ does not override DTV-specific requirements |
The table is deliberately small. A long international directory can look authoritative while hiding stale details. We prefer showing readers how to verify the controlling page and preserve the result. That method remains useful when a post updates a checklist or an applicant moves.
When two official pages appear inconsistent, compare their dates, categories and intended audiences. A general FAQ may discuss ordinary tourist applications while a newer DTV notice addresses a narrower change. If both still appear to apply and the difference affects eligibility, ask the receiving post to resolve it. Do not choose whichever sentence happens to support a cheaper trip.
Check DTV filing separately after 31 August 2026
The DTV residence question changed materially. Moscow's official notice reports that, from 00:00 on 31 August 2026 in Thailand, proof of permanent residence replaces the document indicating current location and criminal-record clearance is added. It expressly says applications submitted before that date continue under the previous supporting-document requirements. Moscow DTV document notice.
Savannakhet's current DTV instructions say applicants there must be Lao nationals or permanent residents of Lao PDR. That is a specific reason a short trip to Laos should not be assumed to establish DTV filing eligibility.
For this broad guide, the consequence is a separate decision checkpoint. Before using any earlier travel-based filing plan, ask whether it still fits the receiving post's DTV rules and the actual submission date. Do not transfer that DTV change to every other visa category without a source. Equally, do not use a general tourist FAQ to avoid the DTV checkpoint.
We keep the detailed status-document comparisons in the DTV residence guide, the dated notices in the DTV changes ledger, and certificate preparation in the DTV criminal-record guide. This division matters: determining where you can file comes before ordering the precise certificate and translation package.
If you created a draft before the change but submitted afterwards, do not assume the draft creation date protects the earlier checklist. Identify the submission event shown in your actual case record and seek clarification if its timing is disputed. The published transition wording should be applied to the real record, not to a remembered date when you first began planning.
Distinguish a residence document from an address document
A document can be authentic yet answer the wrong question. A bank statement may connect you to an address. A permit may identify your legal status. An entry record may establish arrival. Whether one is sufficient depends on the exact requirement being assessed, not simply whether it has your name on it.
We use an evidence-purpose check: what fact is this document supposed to establish, and can a reader see that fact directly? If the requirement concerns permanent residence, a hotel invoice is not a substitute merely because it includes dates and an address. If the requirement concerns current physical presence, an old residence card may leave unanswered if you are actually in the country today.
A verified Reddit discussion, “Further documents for evisa”, illustrates the practical difficulty. The poster was living with a brother and had no utility bill in their own name after receiving a residence-evidence request. The inspected page displays the discussion as about one year old; it does not establish current mission policy or a DTV rule after August 2026.
Our answer is to identify the missing connection before proposing a substitute. Is the officer asking for address, lawful status or present location? A relative's bill may show the property's address without connecting the applicant to it. A phone bill without an address may not answer an address question at all. An alternative should be assessed against the fact requested and, where necessary, confirmed with the post.
This is why we would not tell every person staying with family to upload the same standard letter. The right response depends on the mission, category and request. A truthful explanation plus accepted evidence can resolve an evidential gap; changing whose name appears on an existing bill creates a different problem.
Account for temporary residence and expiring status
Temporary residence can be a perfectly lawful status while still being insufficient for a particular filing rule. Keep those statements separate. A work permit, student permission, spouse permission or long visitor visa may be relevant, but none should be relabelled permanent residence because you have lived in the country for several years.
Read the actual status and any official explanation of it. Some systems use cards, some use electronic records, and some have renewal documents that extend an existing status. If your evidence depends on a renewal or automatic extension, provide the official material that explains the continuing status when the post requires it. A payment receipt for a renewal application may answer a different question from a grant of permission.
Check the dates against the whole plan. A document valid on the day you start preparing may expire before submission. Permission valid at submission may not cover an unexpectedly long wait. We recommend making a timeline with three events: current status expiry, intended Thai application submission and planned onward travel. Then add any unavoidable renewal appointment or required passport handover.
If the timing is tight, resolve it before paying the Thai application fee. That might mean completing a lawful local renewal, applying from a different genuinely eligible location, postponing travel or seeking advice about the correct route. There is no useful filing strategy that depends on overstaying the country in which you are waiting.
An expiring physical card can also be different from expiring underlying status. Do not assume either equivalence or automatic continuity. Identify what the competent authority has actually granted and what evidence the receiving Thai mission will accept for it.
Plan to be in the right place at the right time
Location is a sequence of facts, not a single box filled once. You may prepare documents in one country, submit in another and want to travel while the case is pending. Write that sequence down before deciding whether it is workable.
London's published warning about leaving its covered territory during processing is one example of why this matters. It should prompt a specific check with your own post rather than an assumption that every mission uses the same wording. A digital approval email can reach you anywhere, but email delivery does not answer whether your application remains properly before the receiving authority.
Ask what physical presence is required at submission, during processing and for any interview. If a mission has not clearly addressed planned travel, explain the proposed dates and destination when requesting clarification. Do not treat silence as permission. If your plans change after submission, use the handling post's official channel to ask how that change affects the existing application.
We recommend separating the travel you must take from travel you would merely prefer. An essential family commitment or expiring permission may require a different schedule. A discretionary weekend trip may be easier to postpone. That distinction helps you make a realistic plan without pretending an authority must decide before your booking becomes expensive.
Also consider physical access to your passport. Another country's visa process might require the original at the same time a Thai mission requests an interview or identity check. Confirm the actual requirements and coordinate the sequence; do not promise the same document to two processes on incompatible dates.
If you are already in Thailand, identify the next process correctly
An overseas e-Visa application and an in-country immigration application are different procedures. Being able to open a website from Bangkok does not establish permission to submit an overseas application from Bangkok. The worldwide rollout notice's exclusion of Thailand is a reason to begin with your actual immigration position rather than with a form.
Check your passport entry record, current permitted stay and any existing visa or re-entry permission. Then identify what you want to do next: extend an existing stay, change an eligible status, make a future overseas visa application or leave Thailand. Those choices require different evidence and authorities. Do not call them all a visa renewal and assume a single online process covers them.
For retirement planning while already in Thailand, our in-country retirement guide addresses the starting strategy. For DTV maintenance, use the DTV stay, extension and re-entry guide. Neither link should be read as a promise that your present status can be changed or extended.
If an overseas application is appropriate, identify an eligible filing destination before arranging departure. Leaving Thailand proves departure; it does not by itself make every nearby Thai mission available for every category. Check lawful entry to the destination country, its permission to stay, the mission's jurisdiction and category rules, and the time needed to complete the process there.
Our view is that a workable overseas plan has two independently sound parts: lawful presence in the filing country and an application that its responsible Thai mission can accept. A cheap return flight is useful only after both parts are established.
Check the passport you will actually use
If you hold more than one nationality, start with the passport intended for this application and trip. Record any other nationality where the form asks for it. A second passport may be relevant to route eligibility, but it does not change where you are physically located or automatically transfer an application to another mission.
Check how your residence evidence connects to the chosen passport. A permit might record an older passport number or a different nationality. That does not necessarily make the status invalid, but the connection needs an accurate explanation and any supporting record the mission requires. Do not omit the discrepancy and hope the reviewer will infer it.
A residence card and a travel document also serve different purposes. If you travel on a refugee travel document, certificate of identity or another nonstandard document, identify its exact type and issuing authority. Do not select ordinary national passport solely because the document resembles one. Ask the receiving post how that document and your immigration status affect the intended application.
Passport renewal can create another timing dependency. If renewal will occur before travel, clarify which document should be used for submission and how a later change would be handled. Avoid assuming that approval attached to one passport can simply be edited after issuance. Keep the old and new records available where lawfully held and relevant.
We would complete this check before arranging category-specific evidence. It can reveal a basic identity or routing issue that a large supporting file cannot resolve. The preparation outcome should be one consistent account of the traveller, their document, their status in the filing country and the application they intend to make.
Review each family member separately
Shared travel does not create shared nationality, residence status or visa eligibility. One spouse may have permanent residence while the other holds temporary permission. A child may have a different passport, an expired card awaiting renewal or a dependent status linked to a parent's employment. Those differences should be visible before anyone submits.
Create one factual row per applicant. Record the passport used, current country, local immigration status, expiry, intended Thai category and relevant relationship evidence. Then identify which facts genuinely can be supported by a shared document and which require an individual record. A family tenancy may help explain a household address without proving every family member's immigration status.
Consider whether the family intends to remain together throughout processing. If one person's filing eligibility requires a different country, that affects accommodation, travel, childcare and the documents each person can access. It may also affect whether the principal applicant's evidence will be available when a dependant needs it. Work through the actual sequence instead of assuming all decisions arrive together.
We would ask the mission a consolidated question only after the individual facts are clear. A message saying “Can our family apply here?” is difficult to answer. A concise table of passports, status types and proposed categories gives the post something concrete to assess. Share sensitive identification documents only through the appropriate official or agreed secure channel.
Where one family member faces a different route, assess that route openly. Do not choose a dependent label merely to keep the forms identical. Our family visa guide explains the relationship questions that belong beside this jurisdiction review.
Three hypothetical cases show the decision process
In the first hypothetical case, an Indian citizen lives in the United Kingdom on a time-limited employment permission and wants a holiday in Thailand. They should identify the actual tourist category and read London's eligibility requirements for that category. They should not assume that the stricter DTV residence wording automatically decides their tourist application. Their planned location during processing and the validity of their UK permission still need attention.
The preparation result is a factual note, not an approval prediction: passport used, exact UK status, current UK residence, travel dates and the official category page. If a status detail is unclear, they ask London before payment. They do not order a DTV police certificate merely because a search result mentioned one.
In the second hypothetical case, a remote freelancer living temporarily in Vietnam plans a short trip to Laos to submit a DTV. An old account of somebody doing this in 2025 does not establish present eligibility. The freelancer needs to check the current DTV filing condition, including the mission's nationality or permanent-residence requirement. A hotel booking in Laos answers an accommodation question, not that requirement.
The practical result may be a different filing plan or a delay while the person establishes an eligible location. It should not be a change in how the same hotel booking is described. Our recommendation follows the documented status, even when the resulting trip is less convenient.
In the third hypothetical case, a couple living in Pennsylvania plan to visit relatives in California before travelling to Thailand. They see more than one US mission in online research. They should use the official jurisdiction information to identify the appropriate post and clarify any unusual residence facts. The state from which the final international flight departs does not automatically settle the post-selection question.
These examples are deliberately incomplete in the way real initial enquiries are incomplete. A responsible review identifies the missing fact and the authority that can resolve it. It does not fill the gap with an invented approval outcome.
Ask a question the mission can answer
When written guidance leaves a material ambiguity, send a short factual enquiry using the mission's published contact route. Give the visa category, nationality, actual current country, exact residence status and proposed submission date. Mention planned travel during processing if it could affect the answer. Include the relevant official wording or page link so the question has a clear reference point.
The central question should ask whether the post accepts that particular status for that category, and what evidence it needs. Avoid asking for a guarantee of approval. Acceptance for filing is a narrower question and may be answerable before the substantive application is assessed.
For example, a useful enquiry can explain that the applicant holds a named temporary permit expiring on a specified date and is considering a named visa category. It can ask whether that permit meets the published filing requirement. If a renewal is pending, mention the renewal evidence actually held; do not describe an expected renewal as already granted.
Keep the reply with the page and facts that prompted it. If you later move, renew under a different status or change category, the earlier answer may no longer apply. A mission's reply to someone else, especially a screenshot with the personal circumstances removed, is less useful than guidance addressing your facts.
Our preference is one precise question over several broad enquiries to unrelated posts. The goal is to resolve responsibility and acceptance. Collecting contradictory informal answers can make a straightforward issue harder to understand, particularly when each office has been given a different version of the facts.
Build a filing calendar before making commitments
Work backwards from the travel date, but do not treat it as a deadline imposed on the consulate. Record the post's current application window, expected processing guidance, local holidays and any interview or payment steps. Add time for documents that must come from another country. Keep government processing estimates separate from your own preparation targets.
The calendar should also show how long you can lawfully remain in the filing location. Add residence renewal dates, accommodation commitments and the point at which you must decide whether to change travel. A plan can fail operationally even when the person is eligible to apply, simply because the available time is too narrow for an additional question.
Use flexible travel arrangements where practical and read their actual cancellation terms. Do not represent a reservation as paid travel if it is not, or manufacture an itinerary simply to satisfy an upload field. If the mission requires a particular booking document, obtain genuine evidence that matches the real plan and understand the financial exposure before purchasing.
We recommend choosing an internal review date before the last affordable change date. At that review, check whether the application has been submitted, whether any request is outstanding and whether the travel plan still fits lawful status. This is an administrative checkpoint, not a prediction that a decision will arrive by then.
If the timetable is no longer workable, address the travel problem directly. A provider can help organise the facts and communications, but a service target cannot turn an unconfirmed government decision into a confirmed departure plan.
Complete the final jurisdiction check before payment
Before submitting, read the application as though you were the receiving officer. Do the nationality, passport, current address, residence status and travel dates tell a coherent story? Is the selected mission responsible for the place and category? Is every important assumption supported by current guidance or a relevant written clarification?
Check that the status evidence covers the applicant, not just a spouse or employer. Check that any address document relates to the address entered. Check that a planned country has not been entered as the present location. If you have moved since drafting the form, update the factual review before proceeding.
Keep a compact record containing the official pages checked, relevant dates, any clarification, the final submitted answers, payment record and exact evidence files. The official e-Visa user guide explains application management and status checking. Use the current account controls and retain the record independently so you can respond coherently if more information is requested.
Do not assume an additional-document upload can repair every type of mistake after payment. A wrong mission or a material identity error can require a different handling decision from a missing page. If you discover an error, contact the receiving post with the accurate facts and preserve its response. If the application is formally refused, move to our refusal and reapplication guide before paying for a new one.
Our practical standard is a filing choice you can explain in a short paragraph using truthful facts and current official instructions. That is a stronger foundation than a popular destination, a fast anecdotal approval or an application menu that happened to accept your selection.

I am visiting a country for two weeks. Can I select its Thai embassy in e-Visa?
A portal selection is not proof that the mission has jurisdiction over you. Check the mission's current residence or legal-presence policy and the documents it asks for before paying. If your status there is only a short visit, ask the official channel whether that is sufficient; do not use a hotel address to imply residence you do not have.
I have two passports and live outside both countries. Which nationality controls?
Separate the passport you intend to use for travel from the country where you may file. Check the selected mission's jurisdiction and passport-specific requirements, and keep the identity consistent through the application, booking and arrival record. Do not change passport selection midway merely because a form option appears easier.
