"Marriage visa" is the everyday name. The official visa is the Non-Immigrant O.
Two family routes.
Thai family
Spouse, parent or child of a Thai national, staying more than 60 days.
Non-Thai family
Legally married spouse, unmarried children under 20, or parents aged 50+ of a foreigner living in Thailand. DTV, LTR and SMART families use their own dependant categories.
What you need.
The Thai e-Visa portal sets the baseline. Both routes: single entry, valid 3 months.
Joining Thai family
THB 40,000 a month in income, or a THB 400,000 balance (for example 3 months of statements, or a sponsor letter). Plus your Thai family member's ID and proof of the relationship: a marriage, birth or adoption certificate.
Joining non-Thai family
At least THB 30,000. Plus your family member's passport, Thai visa, stay or work permit, and proof of the relationship.
Money rules vary by embassy.

Extending in Thailand.
Married to a Thai national
Up to one year at a time. The marriage must be registered (Khor Ror 3, or Khor Ror 22 for a foreign marriage recorded in Thailand) and genuine. You attend with your spouse. Fee THB 1,900.
- Foreign husband of a Thai wife: THB 40,000 a month, or THB 400,000 in a Thai bank for the 2 months before you apply, or a mix reaching THB 400,000 a year.
- Foreign wife of a Thai husband: Immigration's published criteria list no money requirement. You show the marriage documents and your husband's Thai nationality.
- Immigration offices can ask for more.
Supporting a Thai child
The same income or deposit test. Stepchildren and adopted children must be unmarried, live with you and be under 20.
Family of a foreign resident
Up to a year at a time, linked to the main visa holder. Spouses (married, living together), unmarried children up to 20, and parents aged 50+.
Already in Thailand?
On a visa exemption, visa on arrival or tourist visa, you can apply at Immigration to change to a Non-Immigrant O (TM.87 or TM.86, fee THB 2,000). Cases based on a Thai family member must be filed at least 15 days before your stay ends. Visitors from most visa-exempt countries now get only 30 days, so start early.
Can you work?
This visa is not a work permit.
As a Non-Immigrant visa holder, you can apply to the Department of Employment for one, for a job not on Thailand's prohibited list.
Don't start work until the permit is issued. Whether your stay must also change, for example to a business visa, depends on your case.
