Thailand Education Visa: ED, ED Plus

What you can study.

The Non-Immigrant ED visa is single entry, valid 3 months, with a stay of up to 90 days. Then you extend in Thailand. Each type needs its own letter:

University (bachelor's+)

University letter and enrolment confirmation, signed by an authorised person, with their ID.

School (primary to secondary)

Letter from the Ministry of Education authority or the international school, plus enrolment confirmation.

Thai or English course, Muay Thai

Letter from the Ministry of Education authority, or a body such as the Sports Authority of Thailand.

Vocational or diploma

Institute letter and enrolment confirmation.

Internship or exchange

A letter from your university confirming the internship, and one from the host company or organisation.

Training or Dharma study

Government or international-organisation training (letter or note verbale), or Dharma study (National Office of Buddhism letter).

What you need.

Passport, and a photo from the last six months.

Proof of where you are now (for example a valid visa or your booking).

Funds for tuition and living costs, usually 3 months of statements or a sponsor letter. The embassy sets the amount.

The letter for your type of study (above).

Some embassies also ask university applicants for a recent criminal-record certificate.

Money rules vary by embassy.

Each embassy sets its own amount, statement period and documents, sometimes in local currency.

Extending in Thailand.

Formal schools and universities

(government or formal private): up to one year at a time, for the period your institution certifies.

Non-formal private schools

no more than 90 days per extension, one year in total, with a curriculum and attendance report.

Extension fee: THB 1,900.

ED Plus for degree students.

For full-time students at bachelor's level or higher.

No re-entry permit while you study. Your university files your extensions.

After graduating, extend up to one year to look for work or travel. Found a job after graduating? You can apply for a work permit; whether your stay must change depends on your case.

Can you work?

This is a study visa: it doesn't allow work, online work included.

To work, you'd need a job offer, a work permit and usually a different visa, such as the Non-B.
